Remarks: the translation of “Zucken” to “twitching” is not exactly matching. It is a small backwards or forward movement with the blade. There is no perfect translation to that word. On one hand it means “withdrawing” the blade a bit, on the other hand it means to threaten with the weapon.

My Glosses to that Zettel

  • Who has in mind, fighting on foot to start [as the attacker].
If you are in a deadly combat do begin, do not hesitate.
  • He has to prepare himself with his spear, [in] two stands for the Zufechten [as] best arms.
Two guards there are, one down and one below.
  • Spear[shaft] and and point
Each guard has a variation with the point or the shaft end to the enemy. So you have four gards with the spear in combat.
  • The first (pre) thrust do without fear.
Do not hesitate or fear in your attack, the first thrust must be executed if it would be the last one needed.
  • Jump and place the point right on
Jump aggressively out of the line and attack him with force and velocity in a place that kicks him off balance, destroy his structure.
  • Does he try to displace [the thrust] twitch if you see him try [to displace].
Sense his motions, if he tries to displace your thrust, twitch and stab him at another opening. If he tries to displace you there, twitch once more.
  • Do you want to thrust with twitching learn to break the displacement.
He might a ignore your twitching and completes his movement to displace your first thrust (that you mutate in a feint) and wound you in the repost. You have to learn to break the displacement before you start feinting.
  • Feel, does he wants reject, sever from [the bind] and wants to flee (step back), so you should near him, but wait wisely the crest. [do not be greedy].
And to learn to break the displacement you have to learn to feel if removes himself from the binding. If he do so and steps back and to the side, follow him, get near him and bring him down. But do not be greedy, do not force that, wait until he does the fleeing. If you are to greedy you will end on his point.
