The following is a not so serious idea to apply the method of systems engineering and software development. There the functional specification is the documentation that describes the requested behavior of an engineering system. Using that method we can define what the user wants from a system and how it should be functionally implemented.

Document objectives

This document describes a system in which the user can fight his opponent and win the fight. Every use case is described as a situation in which the implemented strikes where done only from above. All the definitions are more or less applicable to a mirrored situation, in which the strikes are done from below. But it is to acknowledge that system limitations of the executing bodies are given, so that there is – especially when using two handed weapons – a reduced system available for strikes from below.

Third Party References

The system requires the use of a third party tool named sword. There are the following definitions to the tool:

sword

Document Definitions

SPEED: The following use of the term speed is to be seen as the rotational speed in radians per milliseconds, and not as meter per second in covering distance.

In the document are the terms INSIDE and OUTSIDE used frequently. These terms relate to the fencers body and weapon. The following figures show the Outside as red and the Inside as green.  Each fighter owns an Outside and Inside, the display in the image is optimized for displaying.

inside outside

It is to remark that the arm and leg of the side without the weapon has to be seen as an own system which owns an Outside and Inside of their own. Therefore they are not marked in the image. The Outside and Inside in a weapon based system are first most related to the arm wearing the weapon of the longest reach. Only if the other arm comes into contact it will be of interest if the contact is outside or inside in regard of it.

Module Zornhau

Use Case Description

The user wants to push the opponent’s blade back and outside, and attack inside. The force pushing must be generated at begin of the strike and there must not be any need to push further to the side in contact.

Entry condition

The opponent is using a strike to a target and his hands are slightly higher or same height as the (high) target. Therefore he needs to move his hands below the height of the target in the strike direction.

Expected Outcoume

The user’s blade is on top of the opponent’s blade with the Long-edge in contacting the Long-edge. The opponent feels a sidewise force by the contact and has an opening inside to the face or chest. The preferred contact and hitting zone is the Weak.

Method Implementation

Mandatory

A strike is used in which the hand travels faster than the point of the blade. In contact the point is higher than the hand. Contact is always with the Long-edge. The strike is more or less identical to an axe strike in cutting wood beside the fact that the target is high.

Path of the hand is crossing slightly the center line to the other side. Path of the point is not crossing center.

Start position

It’s easier if hands are high and point is far behind the back, but any position in which the point will have a long way to go before contact will do.

Footwork

Step on same side as strike. Bring weight forward but don’t step before the hand are in end position. Step slightly to the same direction as the strike, but do not cross legs.

Method application

After the Zornhau the inside higher than the hands of the opponent is open for a thrust. This will force the opponent to push to the inside, which will lead to a possible hit on the other side of his blade.

Module Krumphau

Use Case Description

The user wants to push the opponent’s blade forward and inside, and attack outside of the other side of the opponent’s blade. The force pushing must be generated at begin of the strike and there must not be any need to push further to the side in contact.

As an additional feature request the user wants to transport the opponent’s blade over the center to the other side, the attacking direction would still be outside. This feature is called “Transportation”.

Entry condition

The opponent is using a strike or a thrust to a target and his hands are slightly higher or same height as the (medium high) target. Therefore he needs to move his hands strongly and behind the height of the target in the strike direction.

Expected Outcoume

The user’s blade is on top of the opponent’s blade with the Long Edge in contacting the Short-edge. The opponent feels a sidewise force to the inside by the contact and has an opening outside to the face or shoulder. The preferred contact zone is the Mid, the hitting zone the 2nd part of the Weak.

Method Implementation

Mandatory

A strike is used in which the hand travels slower than the point of the blade. In contact the point is lower than the hand. Contact is always with the Long-edge.

Path of the hand is not crossing the center line, it stays on the same side. Path of the point is crossing the center line to the other side.

Start position

It’s easier if hands are high and point is pointing to the sky far, but any position in which the point will have a short way to go before contact will do.

Footwork

Step on same side as strike. Bring weight forward but don’t step before contact. Step outside if you get contact with the Weak, and far inside if you get contact with the Strong and transport the opponent’s blade to the other side.

Method application

After application the opponent has an opening at the outside higher than his hand. It is possible to avoid contact if the attack from the entry condition is not met and can easily evaded to the side. In this case the preferred target would be the hands of the opponent.

Furthermore the feature “Transportation” allows access to the lower openings but needs the quality management in the use of steps.

Module Twerhau

Use Case Description

The user wants to push the opponent’s blade outside, and attack outside on the other side. E.g. the user pushes the opponent’s sword to the opponent’s left side and wants to hit on the opponent’s right side.

The force pushing must be generated at the end of the strike and there must be the option to push further.

The application must be possible from all sides and all directions using any edge.

Entry condition

The opponent is using a strike to a target and his hands are far higher than the height of the target. Therefore he needs to move his hands far before the sword gets contact.

Expected Outcoume

The user’s blade is below the opponent’s sword and the contact zone is in the first Strong in the user’s blade and in the first Weak of opponent’s blade. The second Weak of the user’s blade hits the opponent or threatens to hit.

Method Implementation

Mandatory

The implementation is using the Edge-Versus-Flat model in the Figure 1 (Tool definition figure) and therefore reduces the size of the Strong in the opponent’s blade. That way the user’s blade gets contact in the first Weak of this blade.

A strike is used in which the hand travels at the exact same speed as the point of the blade. In contact the point is same height as the hand. Contact is with the Long-edge or Short-edge if reversed hands are used.

Path of the hand is slightly crossing the center line, the end position is high and far forward the body. Path of the point is identical to the hand.

Optional

The strike can be executed with the hands reversed or not, if done from the right side (right-handed user). Therefore any edge may get contact. The rotation of the sword along the length axis must be done at the beginning of the strike (see module Schielhau in comparison, which is at the end of the strike).

If the strike is executed from the left side (right-handed user) and a two handed sword is used, we recommend not to use the Short-edge for contact.

Start position

It’s easier if hands are high and point at the point is in the same height as hands.

Footwork

Step on same side as strike. Bring weight forward but don’t step before hands are near end position. Step far in the opposite direction of the strike.

Method application

After application the opponent has an opening at the inside, and/or at the outside of the second weapon or arm at the same height as the hands.

If the opponent pushes hard to the side it is wise to repeat the application to the other side.

Module Schielhau

Use Case Description

The user wants to push the opponent’s blade outside and down, and attack any side over the opponent’s blade.

As an additional feature request the user wants to transport the opponent’s blade over the center to the other side, the attacking direction would change to under the blade. This feature is called “Transportation”.

Entry condition

The opponent is using a strike or a thrust to a target and his hands are at same height or slightly lower than the height of the target. Therefore he needs to move his hands strongly before the sword gets contact.

Expected Outcoume

The user’s blade is higher and on top the opponent’s sword and the contact zone is in the second Strong in the user’s Short-edge and in the Mid of the opponent’s blade. The second Weak of the user’s blade hits the opponent or threatens to hit.

Method Implementation

Mandatory

A strike is used in which the hand travels faster as the point of the blade. In contact the point is higher or same height as the hand. Contact with the Short-edge is of high priority. The rotation of the blade along the length axis must be done near or in contact (see module Twerhau in comparison), and while the point is higher than the hand (see module Scheitelhau in comparison).

Path of the hand is well crossing the center line, the end position is low and far forward the body. Path of the point is identical to the hand.

Optional

The strike can be executed with the hands reversed or not, but is always done with reversed hands due to user request.

Start position

It’s easier if hands are high and point shows to the sky.

Footwork

Step on same side as strike. Bring weight forward but don’t step before the hand are in end position. If the opponent’s hands are lower than shoulder than step slightly to the same direction as the strike, but do not cross legs. If the opponent’s hands are higher than shoulder, step to the opposite direction of the strike.

Method application

After application the opponent has an opening at the inside, and/or at the outside of the second weapon or arm at the same height as the hands.

If the opponent pushes hard to the side it is wise to repeat the application to the other side.

Module Scheitelhau

Use Case Description

The user wants to push the opponent’s blade inside and down and attack any side over the opponent’s blade.

As an additional feature request the user wants to move his blade over and under the opponent’s blade to find the lower openings to both sides.

Entry condition

The opponent is using a strike or a thrust to a target and his hands are far lower than the height of the target. Therefore he needs to move his hands far before the sword gets contact.

Expected Outcoume

The user’s blade is higher and on top the opponent’s sword and the contact zone is in the first Weak in the user’s Long-edge and in the Strong of the opponent’s Short Edge. The second Weak of the user’s blade hits the opponent or threatens to hit.

Method Implementation

Mandatory

A strike is used in which the hand travels slower than the point of the blade. In contact the point is lower or same height as the hand. Contact with the Long-edge is of low priority.
An optional rotation of the blade along the length axis must be done near or in contact (see module Twerhau in comparison), and while the point is lower than the hand (see module Schielhau in comparison).

Path of the hand is near the center line, the end position is high and far forward the body. Path of the point is identical to the hand.

Start position

It’s easier if hands are high and point shows to the sky.

Footwork

Bring weight forward but don’t step before the hand are in near end position. If the opponent’s hands are lower than shoulder than step out right (if the opponent is right handed), if the hands are high step to the other side (and reverse the hands to the other side too).

Method application

After application the opponent has an opening over the weapon hands or lower if he raises his defense.
